1. A brief history of Chelsea

Chelsea Football Club is an English professional football club based in Fulham, London. Founded in 1905, the club competes in the Premier League, the top division of English football. Chelsea is among England’s most successful clubs, having won six top-flight titles, eight FA Cups, five League Cups, four FA Community Shields, two UEFA Cup Winners’ Cups, one UEFA Champions League, one UEFA Europa League, and one UEFA Super Cup.

Chelsea’s home ground is Stamford Bridge, which is located in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The club’s training ground is located in Cobham, Surrey. The club’s owner is Roman Abramovich, who acquired the club in 2003. Chelsea is the eighth richest football club in the world, with an annual revenue of €428.6 million in 2016–17.

The club’s traditional kit colors are royal blue shirts and shorts with white socks. Their crest has been changed several times in attempts to re-brand the club and modernize its image. The current crest, featuring a lion rampant regardant holding a staff, is a modification of the one introduced in the early 1950s. The club has the sixth-highest average all-time attendance in English football and the seventh-highest in the United Kingdom.

Chelsea’s fans are among the most loyal in the Premier League. Chelsea FC Supporters’ Trust, an official supporters’ group, has a membership of over 14,000. Chelsea’s home games attract an average attendance of 41,463, making Stamford Bridge the ninth-largest ground in the Premier League and the eighth-largest in the United Kingdom. Since 2003, Chelsea has been owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.

In 1896, Gus Mears acquired the Stamford Bridge athletics stadium with the aim of turning it into a football ground. An offer to lease it to nearby Fulham was turned down, so Mears opted to found his own club to use the stadium. Chelsea was founded on 10 March 1905 at The Rising Sun pub (now The Butcher’s Hook), opposite the present-day main entrance to the ground on Fulham Road, and was elected to the Football League shortly afterward. The club won promotion to the First
