1) Derek Carr – Who is he?
Derek Carr is an American football quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He played college football at Fresno State, where he was the Mountain West Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2013.
Carr was born in Bakersfield, California, and raised in nearby Stockdale. He is the younger brother of former NFL quarterback David Carr. Derek played high school football at Crespi Carmelite High School, where he was a three-year starter and led his team to a 34–5 record. He was named the Elk Grove Courier’s Male Athlete of the Year as a senior. Carr attended Fresno State, where he played for the Fresno State Bulldogs football team from 2009 to 2013. As a junior in 2012, he was one of three finalists for the Manning Award, given to the nation’s top quarterback.
In his senior season in 2013, Carr was the Mountain West Conference’s (MWC) Offensive Player of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to an 11–1 record and a share of the conference title. He was also a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the Senior CLASS Award. After his senior season, he was invited to play in the 2014 Senior Bowl, where he was named the game’s Most Outstanding Player.
Carr was drafted by the Raiders in the second round, 36th overall, in the 2014 NFL Draft. He was the third quarterback taken in the draft, after Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel. He signed a four-year, $5.37 million contract with the Raiders on May 20, 2014. Carr made his NFL debut in the Raiders’ season opener against the New York Jets and recorded his first career touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. He started all 16 games as a rookie, completing 348 of 599 passes for 3,270 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

As a senior in 2012, Carr was the starting quarterback in all 14 games. He completed 351 of 527 passes for 4,849 yards with 48 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also ran for three touchdowns.

Derek Carr was born in Fresno, California, to Rodger and Sheryl Carr. He has an older brother, Darren, who also played quarterback at a young age. His father was his coach growing up. Carr was homeschooled from kindergarten through ninth grade. He played football for Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas. In his senior year, he was named the Fort Bend County Offensive Player of the Year and District 23-5A Most Valuable Player. Carr also played basketball and ran track in high school.
Carr attended Fresno City College, where he played for the Rams. As a freshman in 2009, he was named the Central Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Year. In 2010, his second and final year at Fresno City, Carr was again named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year after leading the Rams to a perfect 10-0 record and a conference championship. After his two years at Fresno City College, Carr transferred to the University of California, Berkeley, where he played for the Golden Bears. In his first year with the team, he was named the starting quarterback after an injury to the team’s previous starter, Zach Maynard. Carr started all 12 games for the Bears in 2011, completing 246 of 425 passes for 3,270 yards and 26 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. He was named honorable mention All-Pac-12 Conference. In 2012, Carr started all 13 games for the Bears and completed 262 of 440 passes for 3,516 yards and 28 touchdowns with seven interceptions. He was named second-team All-Pac-12.
After his junior year, Carr decided to forgo his senior season and declare himself eligible for the 2014 NFL Draft. He was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the second round with the 36th overall pick.
Carr married Heather Neel in 2012. The couple has three sons: Dallas, Deker, and Denver. Carr’s older brother, Darren, is married to Heather’s sister, Mindy. The two brothers are therefore brothers-in-law.
