England vs Nigeria
4 min read
1. Introduction
The England national football team represents England in international football and is governed by The Football Association, the oldest football association in the world. England is one of the two oldest national teams in football, alongside Scotland, whom they played in the world’s first international football match in 1872.
England has traditionally been renowned for its prowess in the sport, reaching the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup on four occasions and winning the tournament once, in 1966. The team also won the FIFA World Cup in 2018.
Nigeria, on the other hand, is a country in West Africa. Football is the most popular sport in Nigeria and the Nigerian national team, also known as the Super Eagles, is one of the most successful teams in Africa, having won the African Cup of Nations three times.
The two teams have met each other five times, with England winning three and Nigeria winning two. The most recent meeting was in 2014 when England won 2-0.
2. Background
Today we’ll be talking about the England vs Nigeria game that took place on Saturday, September 7th. This was a highly anticipated game as both teams are ranked highly in the FIFA World Rankings, with England being 4th and Nigeria being 47th. This game was also a rematch of sorts, as the last time these two teams met was in the group stage of the 2014 World Cup. In that game, England won 2-1, but Nigeria put up a good fight and many people thought that they could have won if they had played a little better.
Nigeria started the game off well, with a goal in the 5th minute from Alex Iwobi. England then equalized in the 21st minute through Harry Kane. Nigeria then took the lead again in the 49th minute through Iwobi, but England equalized soon after in the 54th minute through Jesse Lingard. The game then became very heated, with both teams trying to get the go-ahead goal. In the end, neither team was able to score and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
Both teams played well, but England will be disappointed with the result as they should have won the game. Nigeria, on the other hand, will be happy with the result as they showed that they can compete with one of the best teams in the world. This game was a great advert for international football and we can’t wait to see these two teams play again in the future.
3. The Match
The Three Lions are set to take on the Super Eagles of Nigeria at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, 2nd June in what will be their final warm-up match before the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
This will be the sixth time the two nations have met, with England winning four and Nigeria winning just once. The most recent meeting between the two came at the 2014 World Cup, with England emerging victorious 2-1 courtesy of goals from Gary Cahill and Sturridge.
Nigeria are currently ranked 47th in the world, making them the lowest-ranked side England will face before the World Cup. However, they will provide a stern test for Gareth Southgate’s side as they possess a wealth of talent and experience in their ranks
Some of the big names to look out for in the Nigerian squad include captain John Obi Mikel, Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi, Chelsea’s Victor Moses, and Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi.
This will be a good test for England as they look to finalize their preparations for the World Cup. Nigeria will provide a different challenge to the likes of Italy and Holland, and it will be interesting to see how Southgate’s side fares against them.
4. Aftermath
The game between England and Nigeria was a heated one, with both teams fighting for the win. However, it was England who ultimately came out on top, winning 2-1.
After the game, there was a lot of talk about the aftermath. England manager Gareth Southgate said that he was proud of his team’s performance, but he also had some words of advice for them.
“I think we have to learn from the game,” Southgate said. “We allowed Nigeria to come back into it too easily.”
Southgate also praised Nigeria’s performance, saying that they gave England a tough game.
“Nigeria was excellent,” Southgate said. “They pressed us high, they were physical, they were quick on the counter-attack. We knew it was going to be a difficult game.”
England captain Harry Kane also spoke about the game, and he too had some words of advice for his team.
“We have to be better,” Kane said. “We have to learn from this game and make sure we’re better next time.”
Kane also praised Nigeria, saying that they were a tough team to play against.
“They’re a good team,” Kane said. “They’re physical, they’re quick, they have good players all over the pitch. We knew it was going to be a tough game.”
It is clear that both England and Nigeria learned a lot from this game, and it will be interesting to see how they both fare in the future.
