1. Introduction to USA Basketball

USA Basketball is the national governing body for the sport of basketball in the United States. It is responsible for the selection and training of the USA men’s and women’s national basketball teams, and the development of youth basketball programs in the country.

The AAU did not return as a factor in international competition until the 1980s when it began to stage its own international tournaments. The FIBA Americas Championship for Men, originally known as the Pan American Games, was first held in 1975. The women’s tournament was first held in 1987.

In 1996, the United States women’s national team, led by head coach Tara VanDerveer, won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Atlanta.

In recent years, USA Basketball has experienced a resurgence in international competition. The men’s national team, led by head coach Mike Krzyzewski, won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, and repeated as gold medalists at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
